What is orthopaedic conditions are considered urgent and when can I get in to see Dr Markham.
  • Every week, we keep a set number of urgent appointments open in our Gosford Office – specifically to deal with worker injuries.
  • These injuries are triaged on an as needs basis and generally include knee injuries (such as meniscal tears), shoulder injuries (such as rotator cuff tears) and sometimes fractures or sprains.
  • Whilst sporting injuries and chronic arthritis are painful, they are not usually triaged as urgent, but we will try to fit you in as soon as possible.
  • Dr Markham specialises in hip, shoulder and knee conditions.
How is my worker injury charged?

If you have an approval number from your insurance company or employer at the time of consultation with Dr Markham, your first consult will not be charged. However, please note that you will be charged if you do not have this information. The only exception is the rare circumstance where the injury has occurred in the last 24 hours. In this case, approval is not required, and Dr Markham will bill the employer directly.

Worker compensation helps ensure injured workers are compensated for injuries sustained at work. This compensation can include costs for surgical and medical assessments, rehabilitation, surgery, ambulance, medicines, physiotherapists, psychologists and ergonomic support to get you back to work faster.

What should I bring?
  • A referral from your GP, hospital emergency doctor or other medical doctor
  • Your claims approval number
  • X-Rays, scans, pathology, blood work, reports
  • New claims must first be reported in the employer’s register of injuries.
  • Your employer will need to lodge a claim – through SIRA (The State Insurance Regulatory Authority NSW). You will need an approval number to cover the cost of your surgery.
  • If your claim is an existing claim, please notify your case manager about treatments in order to get funding approval.

What happens in a worker injury assessment?
  • Dr Markham will undertake a thorough assessment of your symptoms and an outline of the mechanism of injury, a physical examination, the extent of the injury and what capacity you may have to work.
  • He will also assess the need for treatment, physiotherapy, surgery or any additional rehabilitation, also looking at any medical co-morbidities.
  • Dr Markham can also refer to a trusted network of specialists, psychologists, occupational therapists, pain physicians, psychiatrists and physiotherapists.
  • Dr Markham can also provide a second opinion service for injured workers.
